DEPARTMENT OF DRAVYAGUNAVIJNANAM
The Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier Ayurveda College, Kottakkal, is a prestigious institution that has been dedicated to imparting high-quality education in Ayurveda since its establishment in 1917. Among the various disciplines taught at the college, Dravyagunavijnanam holds a pivotal position in Ayurvedic education and research.

The Department of Dravyagunavijnanam was originally part of a combined Department of Dravyaguna and Rasasastra, which was established in 1989. Recognizing the growing importance and specialization required in these fields, the department underwent a bifurcation in 2010, resulting in the formation of two independent departments:, Department of Dravyagunavijnanam and Department of Rasasastra & Bhaishajyakalpana
A Postgraduate (PG) program in Dravyagunavijnanam was introduced in 2008 with an initial intake of 4 seats. Over the years, 15 batches have successfully graduated, maintaining an exceptional 100% pass rate. To further enhance specialized training, a PG Diploma (PGD) course was launched in 2019, starting with 2 seats. Since then, 4 batches have completed their training. Recognizing the increasing demand for expertise in Dravyagunavijnanam, the number of PG seats was increased to 5 and PGD seats to 3 from 2020 onwards.
The department plays a crucial role in teaching and training students across multiple programs, including Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), and Paramedical courses. Beyond academics, the department is actively engaged in research and extension projects, collaborating with various institutions to advance Ayurvedic knowledge and practice.

Significant projects undertaken by the department include: Herbal Garden Extension Project, supported by the National Medicinal Plant Board (NMPB) and the Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). This initiative aims at conserving and expanding the diversity of medicinal plants. Interdisciplinary knowledge-sharing projects in collaboration with Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU), focusing on the integration of Ayurvedic principles in veterinary sciences and related fields.

With its commitment to excellence in education, research, and conservation, the Department of Dravyagunavijnanam continues to be a leader in Ayurvedic academia, contributing significantly to the development and preservation of medicinal plant knowledge

PHARMACOVIGILANCE UNIT

The Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centre (PPvC) at Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier Ayurveda College, Kottakkal, has been functional since October 2018. The Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centre operates under the Pharmacovigilance Programme for ASU & H drugs, a central sector initiative under the AOGUSY scheme, funded by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. This centre is assigned with a Program Co-ordinator – Dr N Manojkumar (HOD, Department of Dravyaguna) and Junior Research Fellow- Dr Haseena K, for monitoring it’s functioning.
Functions of the Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centre are

  • To monitor and report the Adverse Drug Reactions
  • To conduct Awareness and Training programs
  • To identify and report the misleading/objectionable advertisements related to ASU & H Drugs to State licencing authority/Drug controller

Below is a detailed account of the Centre’s key functions and achievements.

  • Adverse Drug Reactions reported: 51
  • Awareness Programs conducted: More than 20
  • Articles published: 03

To ensure the efficient functioning of the program, the Centre is required to submit a Monthly Report by the 3rd of each month to the Intermediary Centre—ITRA (Institute of Teaching & Research in Ayurveda), Jamnagar, Gujarat—and the National Coordination Centre—All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi. The Monthly Report includes details of awareness programs, ADR reports, misleading advertisement reports, and fund utilization.
