Introduction

The Department of Rachana Sharira is a pre-clinical department dedicated to teaching Human Anatomy to BAMS students. Our primary focus is imparting a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, fostering a deep knowledge of the body's structure and organization to lay a strong foundation for a successful career in Ayurveda.
            Department provide precise insights into the position, size, shape, and interrelations of various bodily structures. Understanding these details specifically through the lens of applied and clinical anatomy is the cornerstone of diagnosing diseases effectively. Because of this vital clinical link, Rachana Sharira remains an indispensable pillar of the BAMS curriculum.
             The Department of Rachana Sharira features a spacious, well-illuminated, and properly ventilated dissection hall, providing ample number of cadavers for hands-on learning. To support comprehensive anatomical study, the department also maintains a bone bank, a histology laboratory and an extensive museum, which houses well preserved specimens of human body from head to toe. Museum further compliments with embryological and pathological specimens, models, charts and radiographs. Rachana Sharira department is a recognized body donation center, the first of its kind in the Kerala Ayurveda sector. Serving as a bridge between selfless donors and the advancement of medical science, the department ensures that every contribution is treated with the highest level of dignity and purpose.
Teaching & Curriculum:
            Departments focus on providing a thorough understanding of the human body through lectures, small group discussions, histological slide visualization and dissection, often incorporating Competency-Based Medical Education.
Facilities
            Department infrastructure is designed to bridge the gap between traditional Ayurvedic concepts and modern medical science:
Anatomy Museum: Museum showcases a vast collection of human anatomical specimens, models, X-rays, and charts. Articulated and non-articulated bones provide students with a unique opportunity to visualize and understand complex anatomical structures.
Dissection Hall: Equipped with all necessary facilities, allowing students to gain hands-on experience with human cadavers and develop their dissection skill and surgical precisions
Histology Lab: A specialized space for the microscopic study of tissues with more than 75 histological slides.

 Departmental Library: A dedicated resource hub for advanced academic research and reference. The Body Donation Center: As a pioneering center in the Kerala Ayurveda sector, department maintains a highly organized program for the ethical procurement and preservation of cadavers. To date, the department has embalmed over 10 donated bodies and received consents from more than 60 registered donors.

Community Outreach & Academic Extension

The Department of Rachana Sharira extends its expertise beyond the classroom through various educational initiatives:

  • Student Awareness Programs: Conduct specialized sessions on human structure and its relations for High School, Higher Secondary, and Psychology students.
  • Paramedical Training: Provide paramedical students with visualization of dissected structures to help them master their specific anatomy syllabus
  • Museum & Public Exhibitions: The department hosts museum visits for schools and colleges and organizes public outreach exhibitions.
  • Collaborative Events: In partnership with the College Union and local organizations, provide expert exhibits including bones, charts, models, and specimens for medical exhibitions.
  • Department is also conducting Body and Organ Donation Awareness Programs, fostering a culture of contribution to medical science within the community.
  • Body Donation awareness program: A highlight of the department is the annual 'Honoring Body Donation Volunteers' ceremony, held during our Foundation Day celebrations. Each year, department host this special event to formally recognize the individuals who have courageously and selflessly pledged their bodies to medical education. This ceremony serves as a powerful reminder to our students and faculty that these donors are truly their First Anatomy Teacher.
