3) BALAMUKULAM PROJECT

Government of Kerala has many projects for upbringing the health of children. ‘BALAMUKULAM’ is one among these projects. It is included in the 11th five year plan and is aimed for screening the personality disorders and learning disabilities among children in primary classes and giving awareness to students and parents. This project is being conducted by the department of Indian system of medicine. The government has decided to implement this project in selected schools of every district. As a first step of this, Palakkad, Wayanad and Kasargod districts are selected.

As Balamukulam project mainly indents to improve the mental health of children, ISM department approached manovigyan department of VPSV Ayurveda college, Kottakkal because it is one of the main centers of Ayurvedic psychiatry. We took this as a great opportunity with pleasure because of the following reasons.

1. It is a good and effective way for us to propagate the aspects of Ayurveda regarding mental health among common people.

2. This is an opportunity to give awareness about the scope of Ayurvedic treatment modalities in the maintenance and improvement of mental health

3. To bring up the quality of life of a new generation through attending the scholastic backwardness and other mental sub normalities in children.

The schools selected in Palakkad districts are Govt. UP Schools of Thathamangalam, Aryampavu and Thenkara. The classes were scheduled to conduct in 4th 5th and 6th of February in these schools respectively. We have communicated effectively that Ayurveda has the concept that the psychological and cognitive development of a human being starts from the preconception period itself. And it is already proved that the dietary and socio – environmental factors had a strong influence in the learning process. So we designed the classes in such a way to give awareness to the parents about the importance of good nourishment for their children, need of maintaining a healthy family environment, realizing about the real learning disabilities in their children and the importance of early detection and treatment of mental disorders etc. Classes are given to the children after dividing them into two groups- students from 1st to 4th standards and from 5th to 7th standards. Among these children, we have effectively conveyed the ideas such as, how to practice a healthy daily routine, importance of personal hygiene, essentiality of a healthy diet, benefits of proper exercise, etc. It is also emphasized the importance to their social aspects including needs of healthy friendships, respect to opposite sex, role of them in maintaining good environment, etc. for a good social life

All these classes were planned and guided by Dr. C.V. Jayadevan ( Professor &HOD dept. of Kayachikitsa), Dr. Satheesh and Dr. Vinod.

The classes for the parents were conducted by Dr. Parvathi Devi and Dr. N. J.Benoy. (P.G. Scholars)

For UP students classes are taken by dr.Shihabudeen and dr. Riyas and for LP students the classes are taken by dr. Thusara, dr. Jayanthi and dr. Sangeetha.

In GUPS Thathamangalam about 700 students and 400 parents attended the awareness classes and individual counseling was done for 110 students and their parents. In GUPS of Aryampavu about 250 parents and 450 students attended the classes and counseling was given for 80 students and parents. About 800 students and 450 parents attended the classes and counseling was given for 120 students in Thenkara GUPS. These classes got very good responses from the parents, teachers and students.

The medical officers of ISM dept. dr. Rajahariprasad ,dr. Dinesan and dr.shibu were assigned the for implementing this project in these schools. They had already screened many students with nutritional deficiency and academic backwardness etc. In these schools and the children were undergoing on medication from the last two months. The doctors and PG scholars from our department examined these students for their cognitive development and suggested some drugs which are proved their action in improving the cognitive fuctions, like sankhupushpi choorna, yashti choorna etc

The class teachers of these schools are assigned to make a list of students with scholastic backwardness. We have communicated with these studens and their parents individually in successive sessions conducted on 13th &15th February and 1st march respectively in these schools.

Our aim is to come out with a scientific and effective module regarding the improvement of mental health of young children as they are the blossoms of a better future. As this was our first step regarding this area it is found to be satisfactory till then we are working hard as a whole team for giving the maximum benefits to the children.

4) GARHASTHYAM -2013

Marriage is the union of two souls from two poles apart of thinking arena. This is the root cause of all problems that a newly married couple faces. Hence it is the duty of the concerned authorities to address this specific and delicate issue prevailing in our society.
