DEPARTMENT OF AGADATANTRA
HISTORY
Kerala is enriched with clinical knowledge in Ayurveda. The world renowned Institution Aryavaidya Sala is at Kottakkal- malappuram District of Kerala. Arya Vaidya Sala paved way to modernisation of the system by uplifting the medicine manufacturing techniques and reaching to many number of clients (patients) through modernisation. The founder of Arya vaidya Sala envisaged the uplift of science by establishing a padhasala (school of Ayurveda). This school has upgraded to a college recognised by Central Council of Indian Medicine along with time line.
Malabar area of Kerala is very famous for various kinds of management of clinical toxicological situations. Honourable Vaidyaratnam PS Varier, the founder of Arya Vaidya Sala and Vaidyaratnam PS Varier Ayurveda College established a Visha chikitsa Kendra attached to the charitable Hospital of Arya vaidya Sala. It was his vision that the knowledge of vishachikitsa (toxicological management) has to sustained regardless of time bar.
Though various departments of College flourished a lot, the academic scenario of know how on toxicological management was still in vogue at national- state- local levels. To fulfil the need of time, to revive the knowledge of visha chikitsa and to retrieve the clinical oriented toxicological practices with a backup of academical knowledge, the Department of Agad Tantra formed in 1993 with a vision to expand the academic area on snake bite and other toxicology managements. The Department handles subjects- Ayurvedic Toxicology, Forensic Science, Jurisprudence, Acts & rules related to medical field, Zoonotic and vector borne diseases, Impacts of air-water-land pollutions, Medical Ethics, Medical records by inputting relevant knowledge
to the II year undergraduate B.A.M.S. students
The UG Department aims at (1) moulding good practitioners with contemporary knowledge in medical law and Ethics; (2) Handle cases coming under Agad Tantra with reasonable skill; (3) recognising the statutory requirements of the profession; (4) recognizing the point of referring to specialists.
After ten years of UG teaching experience the department stepped up to PG level (CCIM recognised) on 2003.
At PG level it deals with various research programs, in depth knowledge on Toxicology, its management, jurisprudence with its applications, medical ethics, and specific knowledge in formulations and processes.
The PG Department aims at (1) handling all toxicology cases with contemporary upliftment of knowledge; (2)making capable of imparting knowledge and advice on current statutory requirement of profession; (3) effectively involving in policy making in the area of development of science
The Department also doing research in connection with drug interactions and its toxicological management.
